Abra Moore and I were up in Canada visiting a friend of ours and this song
came along so we drove out of the mountains to Edmonton and found a small studio, we went in and recorded this song (as well
as the basic tracks for "fever" and "going up the country" for the fruitless e.p.). I put down the
Guitar, Bass and Drums first, then a scratch vocal... Then Abra put down what is for me; one of the most hauntingly beautiful
piano tracks I have ever heard, Then she put down that amazing vocal - and we were done for the day. We drove back up into
to the mountains of Jasper area and had dinner at our friends house... and knew we had just recorded something lovely.
When we got back to Austin, I asked Malford Milligan to sing the lead for me. I really love his and Abra's voice together
: two of my favorite singers in the world - we had just done most of the recording for the PALM FABRIC ORCHESTRA album together
and we were on a roll.
This is one of my favorite PDP / PFO songs ever. There is a Strange Magic
in this recording... Which is what you hope for every time you record, but only ever so often happens.

It is our goal here at Platetectonic Music to make this site
a sort of 3 dimensional virtual magazine
with a
cornucopia of broad topic things to share, including music, but beyond it too;
As Kerouac and the Beat Poets used to say 'everyone is
a saint and everything is holy'... and that is the way we see it.

FILMED IN HAWAI'I
In 1999 the 2nd Chicago Line Up of PDP went to Hawaii to rehearse and perform 5 nights in a row
at the Night club "Wave Waikiki" - We had an entourage of about 25 people, and almost all of them stayed at my Family
home on Oahu; people were on air mattresses everywhere and some even camped in the back yard, we had a beautiful time. It
was an exciting time of re-invention, and new musical exploration. When I look back on it now, we were really musically brave:
we were experimenting heavily & forging a new sound with jazz, live instrument House music, Complex orchestral arrangements,
future rhythms and sweeping instrumental passages.
I wanted to get the band out of Chicago and out from under the microscope of critics and some
fans who were critical of me for having changed the line up of pdp again. So we packed up and went to Hawaii and camped at
my Dad's house to let the new thing bud, flower and grow in a nurturing, neutral environment. It was a super lovely trip,
filled with hiking, swimming, cooking all together in the back yard (and teasing each other about who snored the loudest cause
we were all sleeping on the floor next to each other :) We got a nice warm welcome from the folks back home, and I felt like
we brought something refreshing.... I was so happy to watch these diamonds I had met on the mainland discover Hawaii, and
for Hawaii to discover them...
Our friend Bryan Basham organized a film crew to
come out and document it all, this video contains a rough cut of just some of the footage.

My father's work as a solar physicist took him
around the world (Bolivia, Mexico, India, Puka Puka etc.,). I used to love when he came home because he would bring back gifts
for all of us (ponchos, jewelry, carved wooden objects etc.,) and the currency of the different countries was evocative too.
To this day I love to collect any beautiful bills and coins (when ever I can afford to keep them) when I travel. I keep them
in a cigar box. I also give them to my nephew and to my godson - because I know it will plant the seed of intrigue for travel
in their mind.
It strikes me how paper money around the world is often somewhat symmetrical and beautifully
ornate, and so I set out to do a series of "new money" paper bills of my band members and fellow artists and friends
as a way of saying thank you. This is an on going series. I never know why I do something, and I never really ask, I prefer
to try and just follow an idea like a child at play. CLICK THE PHOTO ABBOVE TO ENTER
