I find it nearly impossible to fully articulate how important PDP is in my
life and what this series of upcoming shows mean to me. PDP has been one of the the most important focuses in my life; a constant,
an adventure, a vehical for expression of music, poetry, thought and art (& my contribution to PDP constitutes the bulk
of my life's work to this point) & more importantly; it has been the catalyst that has brought me together with a myriad
of wonderful strong creative musicians, visual artists and brilliant forward thinkers, and it has taken us all on some amazing
adventures all across the American map & internationally from Japan to BudPest.
It has been the anvil that we, as a collective, have forged bonds of friendship through artistic collaboration.
In a way these shows are an attempt to honor that, and at the same time honor the 2 cities that gave the band inspiring /
nurturing homes during two important era's of the band's life: Austin and Chicago.
(The VERY important city, and line up missing representation from this retrospective is PDP's original home;
Honolulu and the original Hawaii line up of 86 to 87, I wish I was able to get the Hawaii line up together for this series
of shows, but 1 member lives in Berlin, another in Paris and a few more in L.A. & Hawaii, and it was just out of our financial
reach to bring them in for this).
But it was the Austin line up
and the Chicago line up that did all the recording of the records, and each has a distinctive sound, and I just felt it would
be a beautiful thing come all together for a week end to give the fans of the band something special, and for us to have the
chance to play together again and honor the experience we shared making this music.
The reason for these shows now is that it just feels like the right time to document the arc of PDP; It's
the 25th year anniversary of the band, and I wanted to capture it on an audio recording and on film, in it's mature prime.
I plan on playing in PDP till I kick the bucket. It is just what I do.
The band is going strong as ever, but I am certainly aware that the forces of life, creative
interests, family commitments, financial forces may enventually make it more & more difficult for us to all come together
to do this.
I look around on stage and I can't believe how lucky
I am to be playing with the people I have had the chance to meet and play with now, and since the begining, and everyone is
busy with their lives, families, other musical projects, careers... and yet, somehow, everyone finds the way, and time, to
come together and record records, and perform live. They do it out of love for the experience we have forged together. Nobody
does this for money (we all do something else for that).
We try to make
good, honest recordings and conceive and execute a few good quality concerts; at this point in our arc it is important for
me, and everyone in the band, to maintain & protect the integrity the band has built over the 25 years.
Love,
Frank

Grace Before Brunch
Sunday mornings 10:30 AM
July 31 thru August 28
Schubas 3159 N. Southport
Grace before Brunch is the performance of a musical composition entitled "Variations on a Pali chant" by violinist Susan Voelz during the graceful execution of
rasidaton, or thai yoga, with Andrea Rossetto.
21 poses, 123 breaths, 33 minutes of
relaxation.
It’s a performance that you can participate in or simply watch.
During a recent, month-long journey
to Thailand, Susan and Andrea were introduced to thai yoga - a series of self-healing, stretching poses synchronized with
the breath, developed by the Buddha’s doctor 2500 years ago. They would wake at dawn, practice thai yoga to the sounds of geckos and
insects, and then have breakfast.
Upon return, Susan was inspired to create ‘Variations on a Pali Chant
for Violin and Thai Yoga’.She imagined the fluid sequence to be a kind of ballet - each pose suggesting a melody that then enhances the movements.
Grace Before Brunch was born.
Wear loose fitting clothes.Bring a beach towel or yoga mat.
Susan Voelz is an original member of Poi dog pondering who also tours and records with Alejandro Escovedo. She is the author of the Musician’s
Guide to the Road and has composed music for tv and film. This is her first ballet suite.
Andrea Rossetto is a Chicago body worker and yoga instructor.Inspired by her travels, she is developing
her own health products import business.

WEST COAST TOUR LOG:
DEC 2ND: Susan and I flew into San Francisco early and had a Lovely
Dinner / Sleep-over with my Cousin Liz and a group of friends in the outer Sunset, and talked long into the night. Woke up
to see the surf pounding the beach from afar.
DEC 3RD: Chef Night with Eric, Brian and
their Friends in upper Noe Valley San Francisco. Beautiful. Amazing music came through the stereo all night long... enchanting...
(They put us up at the Intercontinental hotel, which can be seen While Jimmy Stewart is driving in Hitchcock's 'Vertigo';
I'm a Hitchcock freak, and I recognized the block (around the Fairmont) -
one day I'm going on a Hitchcock tour of SF.
LATE NIGHT POST: ...back at the hotel tipsy on delicious wine...
"I'm in San Francisco,
Marveling at the tender beauty of the old rough and tumble Grande Dame of American cities. We visited with my cousin
in 'outer sunset' by the sea, and I'm seeing S.F. through new eyes, I've always loved Frisco, but in the last 2
days I have seen her a-new. The sky changed 6 or 7 times today; clear, hazey salt sun, afternoon rich hue, low cloud
sun set, clouds drifting across the moon, fog pillow over the low lands, to full fog haze that made it hard to see
anything. I Can't help but think of Alfred Hitchcock, because he loved this city (he used it for 'Vertigo' and 'The
Birds' - I keep looking for the locations he used in his shoots... But it goes deeper, It's the pacific ocean beating her shore, the mom and pop stores and Asian markets with chicken feet sold by the pound, the people walking everywhere.
It's the smallness... and yet largeness of the city, the crisp air, the old world-ness. Or as Kerouac said, "the
warp of wood of old America, that cut of cloud above the S.P. Alley... the Clarity of CAL, break your heart". I love the way the houses are painted all different colors here. I noticed that there is a lot of salmon color paint
too, and then noticed how the clouds at sunset are slightly salmon colored against the deep blue sky... and i understood why the houses are painted so... sort of like how Sante Fe buildings are earth light brown - it suits the color of
the nature around....
Me and Susan had dinner with some friends
tonight, and a friend remarked that his Parents (from New YorK) said that San Francisco reminded them of NYC 50
years ago... and I got it, I understood; it has remained a walking city with mom and pop stores, close knit and
unique; it hasn't succumbed to 'box, chain store' hum drum... there is still that weird spark of variance of personality
that makes any good city resonate. I am happy to feel that SF has seemingly survived the homogenous chain business
steam roller that has crushed most American cities. This city is warming my heart tonight. "
(after Ted and Max read how much I am loving SF, They both just
assume I am high on E! (For the record: I was NOT, at all. It was just the
Olde S.F. skyline ( and wine) (and Truth) in my blood!).
DEC 4TH: Slightly hung over, but excited... we go to set up our gear for the SLIMS Show and
meet up with Ted, MAx and Dag who flew in from Chicago.
Max sprained
his finger / wrist on the way to catch his plan - but luckily was able to play through it.
Gordie, Glen, James Anthony, Frank Riley, Robin, Vickie, Liz and many friends came out to the the show
at SLIMS, lovely night... returned to the hotel with our Volo Volo Era Sound Woman (& Saint): Deanne; to talk story,
drink Compari and eat crepes.
We love Deanne; More than Disco,
(and I love Disco... but, she... more).
DEC 5TH: FLY TO PORTLAND to play my favorite road
stop venue in America: Portland & The Doug Fir. I love this place, and the folks here are always kind to us. Special
treat for us here was that the TEXAS HOTEL folks (the Label that signed us originally) came out to hang, Beautiful! I love
them, and it was sooooooo good to see them. Family. Portland is very Special - I don't know it well enough to
put my finger on it; but it is somehow self rejuvenating. It feeds it self... (if that makes any sense...) and, it is proud
of it-self & I like that - a lot.
DEC 6TH:
Susan and I had a warming breakfast and walk around Portland, bought groceries for the train ride to Seattle with Dag and
Max. Amtrak is a lovely thing. We had wine, cheese, bread & olives - and then napped all the way to Seattle. We all
hit a local pub for pizza, Guiness & scotch. There had been a wake there earlier and the place still smelled of fresh
tiger lilys.
DEC 7TH: Our Friend
AJ had us over for a Seattle Chef
Night. AJ and I had a wonderful day shopping at Pikes Market and also the local Asian Market and got well stocked. Then we
set to preping & cooking, and had an inspiring night talking about light art from the 1920's and film. Inspiring.
Late night Singing too. The West Coast Makes a lot of sense to me.
DEC 8TH:
We fly home in the Chicago snow, and sleep for 17 hours. It is really good to be in Hyde Park Chicago again too.
I like it all.

Poi
dog pondering Fall East Coast Mini Tour-log:
Just
got back tonight from a wonderful tour of Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont. Max and I went out early and spent some
time in Winthrop MA, We stayed at a B&B by the Harbor and enjoyed an Italian dinner hosted by a Moroccan man at a lovely
restaurant. Then we met up with the rest of the Poi dogs (Susan, Dag, Ted and Charlette) and played in Cambridge at Regatta
bar. Dan Merkle and family were there, as well as my relatives in the area. Small sound system, but we made it work. Had drinks
after with PDP light designer Stephan Yates who lives there. The next morning we headed out to Revere beach to Kelly's for
fried clams - delicious, and hit the road for Ipswich, and beyond to Londonderry to play that night. It was my Mom's sister's
B-Day and she and all my relatives from that part of the country came out, (Dan and family too! Wonderful to see them) It
was a better show I thought, better sound system and environment. We drove back to Ipswich to stay the night in a b&b
and drank champagne for my B-Day in the parking lot till the wee hours. Got up the next day and researched recipes in the
local library and then cooked dinner for our friend Doug and 15 of his friends: Paella, ratatouille, Gazpacho, steak and roasted
peppers. Played an acoustic set that was one of the best, musically finding new places. The next Day Max and I drove the band
to the airport to make their flights, then we drove up to Vermont to Hang with our first road manager Keith and his family
in there place in the woods. Beautiful place by a stream in the rainy woods. Thunder storm. Just perfect. The leaves were
changing colors. It was a magical trip for sure. I'm loving the mini tours. I'm back home and plan to
sleep for 24 hours. Love, Frank
HELLO BROTHERS AND SISTERS! We want to thank you for voting
PDP "BEST ROCK / POP ACT" in the Chicago Reader's, 2009 Readers Poll!
I love Juicy wine company, They are a self run place with heart and vision, and they let me DJ any music I want there. I don't accept any pay because
I want them to be free to follow their vision, with the least amount of financial burden. Times are tough, we need to do what
we can, and we need to care for those around us working passionately, we want everyone to thrive... - I like to be with people
who are doing what the love And, also because I love when people give me an opportunity to do what I love too... play music.
They pay me in glasses of wine,
Farm fresh eggs, and Bacon... really good bacon. All from independently
owned farms. I like this system. This Bacon is so good. Smokey.
I fry up 1 or 2 strips and save the oil for salad dressing, eggs etc., (better than butter or oil), and use the meat &
oil to flavor pasta, & fry w/ eggs, sandwiches; flavor soup,
... what ever. When something is this good - you don't need much.
It's like a fragrance of soul.
This is the thing the fast food nation forgets (or forgoes)... You don't need a
lot, just flavor & passion.
A
little goes a long way when it is good and made with heart.
(The bacon above was tonight's pay, scanned on my scanner, Sarah Lopez can vouch for that;
She thankfully drove me home (to our hood in Lovely Hyde Park).
My home computer scanner now smells good and 'Tennessee Bacon Smokey'!

Note to Journalists: If you rely on hearsay, or don't know anything about us & just search old data bases to meet deadline and come up with
old worn out catch phrases that were wrong in the first place (but still seem to roam the Internet like a virus) like "Folk",
"Global" or "Hippie" we will know you are a slack that knows nothing about us, and are just punching the
clock. We will find you, and tease you. We are tired of uninformed deadline copy writers. And, we have been in

Yes we Can! And Yes we did! I can feel pride returning to the North American
Heart! It is a new era.
We have begun the healing to some
very deep wounds.
Sarah Palin: I just watched the Sarah Palin and Joe Biden debate tonight. I cannot believe
she is even being taken seriously at all as a vice presidential candidate. I felt there should have been the national anthem
swelling up behind her as she spoke, because she was using cliches and trying so hard to butter up (and these are her words) the "Joe 6 pack" and "Soccer Mom" America. She even winked
at the camera at least 3 times! It made my stomach turn to think of all those people who need protection from corporate
friendly government, getting buttered up by the side that has just fleeced them over and over again by (for one of many examples)
trouncing small independent business owners, and making it easy for big corporate business to consolidate and ship American
jobs overseas for cheap labour. Remember Detroit. Those were our American workers left behind there.
People who once owned their own Hardware store are now clerks at Home Depot (selling
goods made in other countries). That is why people are broke, not because of taxation, but because they work for corporate
echelons who make a ridiculous amount of money, while the workers work for low wages (and they take it only because "it
comes with benefits"... i.e. health care... another racket! "health care benefits" are at the tip of the whip of corporate
America - but don't get me started there).
Remember Halliburton. Our present V.P. financially benefited from the Iraq
war through Halliburton (and presently through "Black Water"
Dick Cheney's Mercenary Army).
Let us not forget. Let us not forgive this blunder of a war we are now mired in (over fictitious "weapons of mass destruction").
Remember that that is why Bush led us to war... and remember that that was not the case. It was not because "they
don't like our freedom" as Bush and Palin love to say; We were attacked because radicals did not like our muscling
low prices out of oil rich Arab states (we have always way paid less than other countries - including Europe - as any of those
of you who have been, can attest) because we've had the global muscle to squeeze for our blind dependence on oil.
We could be developing energy alternatives - but the big oil
corporations do not want us to abandon their massive money making
infrastructure.
The other reason is because of
our lack of true support for a free and safe Palestinian state. Those are the facts, based on what Bin Laden stated.
We don't have to like it - we just have to be REAL about it.
Sarah Palin is not a capable political leader. She
is a tactful rouse by the Republican party to try and benefit from the Hillary Clinton fall out. Also, it is the Republican party trying to re-do what they did with George W. Bush; pick a duff-us
"everyman" to win the confidence of people who like to think... "hey, they're just like me"..... and
that just makes me mad. I think it's condescending, and the people being condescended to don't even see it. that's
the kicker.
But all you have to do is look at the state
of the country. It's a mess financially, globally we are dis-respected, and dis-liked for our selfish - short sighted
foreign policy. The Republican party likes to say that the Democrats
are not fiscally responsible and only want to tax, and yet the Republican
party always spends all the money on weapons development, cuts
taxes for the upper tier of the financial strata, and leaves the chest empty. Then the Dems take over because the people want
change, then the Republicans take over and do it all over again - and that's where we are now; Broke. The Republican party got us here, and I'm glad that people are starting to
realize this. You have to pay taxes and stay out of dumb wars to keep some money in the bank, and keep some ethical guide
lines so you don't have to bail out the greedy laze faire.
We
need to take care of Home first. Our people need to be healthy, cared for (because we are the United
States), well educated and able to pay their bills; then we can be in a position to help others.
My heart tells me this: If the red states win this election
I'm gonna want THEM to secede from the United States. They no longer speak for me - they speak for themselves.
Bush was all I could take.
F.Q.O. oct 2008
This is
the actual cover of England's Daily Mirror the day after the election in 2004.
The Chicago Tribune news paper head line the next morning read: "Bush rides moral issues, terror fears to 2nd term, `America has spoken,' he says."
Yes...
America HAD spoken. Each election shows just exactly what kind of country we are. And we were in really bad shape then. Everyone
was scared to speak their mind for fear of sounding un-American. The press seemed affraid to challenge the white house.
We'd
become a fearful, unimaginative country. And half the country
voted to re-elect Bush, a president who had just taken us to war under false pretences.
Amazing but true.
