THE SCENE     WGPR-TV - DETROIT!
Channel 62 signed on air September 29, 1975 (and signed off  late in 1987)
WGPR was the first wholly African American-owned television station in the United States, and was marketed towards Detroit's urban audience. At the time, WGPR's emergence was hailed as an advance for African-American enterprise.

One of the most popular and well-known shows was a nightly dance show titled The Scene, similar in content to the nationally syndicated Soul Train, but VERY distinctly DETROIT and Midwest. You can hear the legacy of the Motor city industry influencing the sound here. What may have seemed like a blip on the radar back then, would prove to be the shock wave of inspiration power that (with Kraftwerk) lead to  the flowering of Hip Hop, House Music, Techno and Electronica.
