NEW CD RELEASE: “Plate Tectonic Music / COMPENDIUM”
A 15 songs mix CD.
A unique release— 2 new Poi Dog Pondering songs, 2 remixes, and a curated selection of sonic adventures
from my various musical aliases— Poi Dog Pondering, Mourning Doves international, Soft Explosion, 8fatfat8, & Palm Fabric Orchestra
All wrapped up in a CD sampler mix of releases from my record label, PLATE TECTONIC MUSIC.
New music / deep cuts.
I believe in the CD (Compact Disc).
It gives musical artists their own affordable means of production.
They can put out their own records and remain independent.
Digital tech moguls basically stole our music, they rent it at a fraction, to sell their platform.
I believe in vinyl, but it is often cost prohibitive.
The CD gives us autonomy & freedom, and quality audio and physical artwork.
This new release is a CD only release.
This release is a unique approach.
It is a double A side release of 2 new Poi Dog Pondering songs,
And a PDP remix, and a Mourning Doves remix,
All wrapped up in a curated sampler of songs from the record label I have ran for 32 years here in Chicago; PLATE TECTONIC MUSIC.
In 1984 I started recording a series of 5 cassette albums, under the moniker Poi Dog Pondering, On the strength of those, in 1987 I was signed to the Los Angeles based boutique label, Texas Hotel Records, which I loved (Vic Chesnutt, Henry Rollins Band, Downey Mildew, Hetch Hetchy). After recording 10 songs for them as Poi Dog Pondering, I signed to Columbia Records (with some trepidation— I was thankful for the exposure Columbia enabled us, but the pressure of a major label was not the best fit for my constantly evolving musical style). PDP recorded 2 albums for Columbia, and then mutually dissolved the contract. Wanting full creative freedom, I opted, (rather than to sign to another label) to start my own. With the help of English producer/engineer, Martin Stebbing, and my friend (and soon to be manager), Carolynn “Chaka” Travis, we got the label up and running. Plate Tectonic Music was born in 1995; the 1st release being the PDP classic album “Pomegranate”.
The music began arriving without restriction, and varied; orchestral pop, experimental instrumental, electronic, Global, Dance, Dream pop…(I’ve always had very eclectic musical tastes. From post-punk Indie rock, to global musics, to soul, acid house & electronic, acid jazz, orchestral, and experimental) it became apparent to me that releasing all this music under the Poi Dog Pondering moniker might be confusing— and so over the years, I found it helpful to create different, individual musical aliases that I could channel the various creative output through, allowing me creative freedom to explore unbound by expectations. Poi Dog Pondering, Mourning Doves International, Soft Explosion, 8fatfat8, and Palm Fabric Orchestra.
This new CD, "Plate Tectonic Music / COMPENDIUM” Is a curated selection of sonic adventures from my various musical aliases—Poi Dog Pondering, Mourning Doves international, Soft Explosion, 8fatfat8, & Palm Fabric Orchestra
